On our way to watch Agatha Christie’s The Mousetrap, my girlfriend and I wanted to eat pizza. With several different restaurants serving pizza within the area, we were stuck for choice. What stood out for us to choose Franco Manca was mainly the price, but also the option to try out sourdough bread, something Franco Manca utilises as their USP.
Although it was very busy, we only had to wait ten minutes to be seated. Of course, we had to take into consideration that everyone dining was probably here for a theatre show in the area. Nevertheless, the manager was able to sit us down in the predicted time given to us.
Starters and Drinks
Franco Manca’s menu is quite small making it very easy to choose through! We didn’t go for any starters as we wanted to delve into the pizzas with an empty appetite. We did order some drinks though, which included some apple juice and a Franco Manca exclusive Green Cola. This drink is your standard Coca Cola but without the use of Aspartame a.k.a. “the bad stuff”. Question is would we be able to tell the difference in taste?
Drinks came through rather quickly, literally within a minute of ordering. I rather enjoyed the taste of Green Cola and found no difference in taste in comparison to Coca Cola. The freshly made apple juice proved to have no faults either.
The pizzas at Franco Manca are identified by numbers, with only seven pizza choices on order. We ordered the 1st and 2nd type of pizzas from the menu, which are basically your traditional tomato-based pizza and your Margherita. The prices of the pizzas start from only a fiver, which for a restaurant is rather quite cheap.
Within ten minutes our pizzas were at our table and ready for us to eat. We dug in tasting both pizzas. The taste was incredible, with such soft dough and melting cheese. For the price of the pizzas, the portion was well above what was expected. Franco Manca takes pride in providing freshly made pizzas with ingredients only used by them. So the taste of their pizzas is definitely different from what you would find elsewhere.
With an appetite still not full, who can say no to dessert. From the menu, we ordered the Lemon Almond Cake and the Chocolate & Hazelnut Cake. Normally we order one and share, but we both had different tastes for dessert so went for both.
Again, we didn’t have to wait long as desserts came within a few minutes. The Lemon Almond Cake came with some double cream and lemon drizzle. Both the cake and cream went well together. It wasn’t too sweet, yet I personally would have asked for more sweetness in the cake. Nonetheless, the cake is still great to eat.
The Chocolate & Hazelnut Cake came with complimentary vanilla ice cream which was something I wasn’t expecting. With me having a sugar tooth, I absolutely loved the cake. It was very soft to break into with the right amount of sugar and sweetness. As the cake was dry, the vanilla ice cream aided in eating.
Franco Manca offers exceptionally fast and excellent service, even for a place where they seem to be constantly busy. With very low prices against the portions given, I would recommend this place for anyone wanting to dine on a budget or is out looking for a different pizza place to the usual Pizza Hut or Pizza Express. Indeed there may be some wait, but it is worth it! As Franco Manca is a chain, be sure to check out their other restaurants across the UK.
